In the English language “to feel blue” is to be sad. This is because blue was related to rain, or storms, and in Greek mythology, the god Zeus would make rain when he was sad, and a storm when he was angry. “Feeling blue” is linked also to a custom among many old deepwater sailing ships. If the ship lost the captain or any of the officers during its voyage, she would fly blue flags and have a blue band painted along her entire hull when returning to homeport.

Conversely, blue can represent happiness and optimism as days with clearer, blue skies tend to be considered times where these emotions are more easily expressed and many artistic contributions have been made referencing clear days with blue skies as something that makes one happy.

The series Blue was made while waiting for and riding on the ferry across the LaHave River and most certainly belongs to the happy and optimistic references to blue. Riding the ferry always makes one feel a little adventurous, as if setting out for a trip to far away places.  The sky was clear, the water blue and the ferry captain and officers were all still very much alive when arriving on the other side.
