The Annual Group Show 2016 at Teichert Gallery

Night Cloud at Teichert Gallery

It’s the 10th year anniversary of the Teichert Gallery’s annual group show. The exhibition received over 200 submissions and a jury of six volunteers chose 62 original and local art pieces from 48 Nova Scotian artists.

“The diversity is incredible,” said Andrea Smith, the executive director of the Teichert Gallery. “We have works from emerging artists to established artists. It’s a great show to celebrate the diversity of Nova Scotian art.”

“This event is a great way to get exposure to what’s happening in the Halifax art scene,” said Smith. “It’s a really exciting show.”

land as art

The Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy received a commissioning grant from Arts Nova Scotia this spring. The project is called Land as Art: A meeting of conservation and creation.

The KCC has commissioned three south shore artists to create land art. The artists are: Don Pentz, a well-known and accomplished painter; Andrew Maize, a conceptual artist currently working with the new Lunenburg School of the Arts; and, Mariëtte Roodenburg, a photographer whose luminous photographs are exhibited internationally. The artists will work directly on the beautiful Kingsburg peninsula to create art out of natural materials found in the landscape. Although the art will be temporary, the project will be documented by Mariëtte Roodenburg and shared online.

Goodbye anderson

Ten years ago, I launched anderson, gallery of contemporary photography, in the old center of Lunenburg, a UNESCO Heritage Site on the east coast of Canada. Today is the end of my gallery. The building has been sold and will continue to be a gallery under a new name and ownership.

Launching and running a gallery of contemporary photography has been an interesting, inspiring and awarding journey. It started out as a fickle of my imagination and it developed into a beautiful gallery. A place dedicated to photography that received a warm welcome in Lunenburg, many returning visitors on a yearly basis, an astonishing number of loyal customers and collectors, and positive attention from the local, provincial, national and international press.

During its ten years of existence, the gallery represented thirty artists on an annual or bi-annual basis, organized an average of six exhibitions a year, including forty-three solo-shows, five book-launches tied in with a photography- or architectural exhibition and numerous one-day events. The gallery was featured in the series “Hot Shops” in the Saturday edition of the Globe and Mail (2007), it was recommended as a place to shop in the Travel Section of The New York Times (2009), it was recommended as a place to visit in EnRoute Magazine, Air Canada’s inflight travel magazine (2010), it was featured twice in The Nova Scotia 2011 and in The Nova Scotia 2012 Doers and Dreamers Travel Guide and it has received generous attention from The Chronicle Herald and LighthouseNow-Progress Enterprise throughout its existence.

It was a place where many interesting conversations took place, where constructive feed back and warm applause was given and received, where good friendships started and new ideas germinated. Thank you so very much friends and supporters of anderson, it was a super good trip!

Baer Art Center, Iceland

Very good, happy news! I have been offered an artist residency at the Baer Art Center in Iceland (www.baer.is). The Center is located in a very remote area, a 4-hour drive north of Reykjavik, on the eastern coast of Skagafjördur, a large fjord facing the Arctic Circle. Each year the Baer Art Center selects ten artists and architects for a one month residency at the Center and this summer I will be working there from June 8th until July 3rd. I am very excited and happy to be selected and look forward to the midnight sun and incredible light conditions. Thank you so very much Susan Hudson and Jed Dodds for your magic words and thank you Baer Art Center for this incredible opportunity!http://www.baer.is
